The United Nations (UN) Security Council has unanimously endorsed Antonio Guterres to lead the Organization for the next five years.
After six straw polls, Guterres received no “discourage” votes from the pool of 13 candidates originally campaigning to become the next UN Secretary-General. This was the first time in the organization’s history that the selection process was made public. Candidates engaged in informal dialogue sessions and two debates all of which was being webcasted live and open to the public.

Speaking to the press today, Russian ambassador and President of the Security Council for the month of October Vitaly Churkin said the Council had a “clear favourite” and was aiming for an “acclamation vote” tomorrow morning. Churkin was joined by ambassadors representing every member of the Security Council in making the announcement.

Guterres served as the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees from June 2005 to December 2015. He was also the Prime Minister of Portugal from October 1995 to April 2002.
