UNITED NATIONS, Oct. 15 2016 – The UN will have a new fictional Honorary Ambassador: the comic character Wonder Woman will officially be appointed as Honorary Ambassador for the Empowerment of Women and Girls at the UN Headquarters in New York on October 21.
The day of the appointment marks the 75th anniversary of the character’s first appearance in a comic book. The character was co-created by Elizabeth and William Moulton Marston in 1941 and is one of the oldest comic superheroes in the world.
The psychologist couple first noticed and criticized the absence of a female character in the world of comic books and created one of the most famous comic icons in history, combining both superhero powers and female charm.
The appointment of Wonder Woman as a UN Honorary Ambassador is part of the initiative Comics Uniting Nations. This initiative, which was founded in 2015, aims at raising awareness around the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and features each of the seventeen Global Goals of the SDG agenda.

The famous DC Comics character will be part of a campaign promoting gender equality, goal number five, of the Global Goals.
“Gender equality is not only a fundamental human right, but a necessary foundation for a peaceful, prosperous and sustainable world,” the UN says in a statement on the objectives of goal number five.
“Providing women and girls with equal access to education, health care, decent work, and representation in political and economic decision-making processes will fuel sustainable economies and benefit societies and humanity at large.“
The first female comic superhero, also known as her alias character Diana Prince, stands for gender equality and represents the strength of women and girls around the world.
Wonder Woman has and will further shift the perception of the stereotypical superhero, which used to be characterized as only male. As UN ambassador Wonder Woman will contribute to supporting the empowerment of women and girls in fiction as well as in real life.

In June 2017 Wonder Woman will become even more famous when she will hit the big screen as the main character of the same-titled movie. The Israeli actress Gal Gadot will star in the upcoming movie directed by American film director Patty Jenkins.
DC Entertainment President Diane Nelson, Gal Gadot and Lynda Carter, the actress who played Wonder Woman in a 1970s TV series, will be present at the UN ceremony October 21 to accept the designation on behalf of the iconic comic book character.
