At a high-level gather to mark the occasion UNICEF chief Anthony Lake said the partnership was helping “thousands of Brazilian children with disabilities participate in and benefit from sports and physical education in their communities.” The event also coincided with the opening day of the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games.

The event highlighted the importance of promoting safe and inclusive physical education. It was also a chance to preview the FC Barcelona, #TeamUNICEF, International Paralympic Committee collaboration filmed this week in Barcelona, featuring FC Barcelona players in an unexpected 5-a-side challenge against members of the Spanish National blind football team. The video will be shown at sporting venues throughout the Paralympic games, which run until the 18th of September, including at Spain’s first 5-a-side match against China.
